First Attempt! Crochet Braids/Twistout!

Crochet Braids using latch hook method
Hello!! I am just coming to you to share my experience doing crochet braids for the first time! I used the latch hook method, which involves using the tool below:

The first time I attempted it, I crocheted all the marley braid hair into my head. My hair was braided straight back but I made a "V" shaped braid in the front, like the  picture below:

This allowed me to be able to switch my part to the middle or the side. I used a brand called "AFRO KINKY BRAID". FYI: I will never use this brand again because the hair gets hard and crunchy and it is dull! We after brushing the marley braid hair out and dampening it with water, I installed it with the latch hook. After installing all the hair, I rolled a few pieces with the hard plastic perm rods, then dipped them in some very hot water in a cup. The process was very hard and I burned myself several times with the hot water! I decided to take it all out because I was tired of burning myself and was not gettng the curl pattern I wanted. I decided to use the "pre-dipped" method instead, were I would roll the hair on the rods first, dip it in hot water for 30 seconds, let it air dry overnight, and install the curled hair in the morning. This worked soooo much better! Below are the examples of the rods I used (some perm rods, some flexi rods) and the type of curl the rods yields:

Perm and flexi rods with culr resulgs (orange, red & purple)

orange flexi rod and curl result

large green flexi rod with curl result

tiny pinkish orange perm rod with curl result

Once the curls were dry, I used the latch hook to install them (took about 25 minutes), and voila!
Finished look!

I love the look, however I dont like how rough the hair I used is. I will be trying it on my hair again soon! I did my sister-in-laws hair (using this same method) and she loved it! She used a different type of hair (Motown Tress) with a little color in it. I like that type of hair better, however she got less hair in one pack:

My Hair Secrets! SHHHH!

Hello ladies! I come to tell you some of my hair secrets! I just want to show you some of the best hair products I have used, that WONT break your pocket and that really work!

Excuse the mess! Gorilla Snot and Miracle Edges

First up is Gorilla Snot...yes Gorilla SNOT! LOL This hair styling gel is called Gorilla Snot and it is amazing. It actually looks and feels like snot lol but when used with edge control (this edge control is super cheap because I couldnt find anything else lol. Gorilla snot works best with Creme of Nature edge control). When used after edge control is slicked on your edges, it works wonders. It holds your edges down all day for that just relaxed look! Check it out! I purchsed it for only $6 on Ebay.com!

Creme of Nature Sulfate-Free shampoo & conditioner, leave in conditioner spray and moisturizer
Next we have the Creme of Nature line. OMG I have not found a better product line that is affordable and works and smells great and is sulfate FREE! Sulfate free products are BEST for African American hair, whether relaxed OR natural! After shampooing, I notice an immediate difference in the softness of my hair AND new growth. After conditioning, my hair is super smooth and silky feeling! Sulfates can dry your hair out so since this line is sulfate free, it will add exceptional moisture back into you hair instead of taking it out. The leave-in conditioner spray is WONDERFUL for natural hair and wavy/deep curly weaves. It adds shine and promotes curl definition! It also smells sooooo good!

Lou Ana Coconut oil...a hair & skin Miracle!

I had always heard about the many benefits of using RAW coconut oil, so I wanted to try it. THIS STUFF IS AWESOME IN SO MANY WAYS! Let me break it down:

Its a great:
  • hair (real and weave!) moisturizer (adds moisture without weighing hair down!)
  • skin moisturizer
  • SPF sunblock (wont burn you in the sun!)
  • make-up remover
  • anti bacterial for acne (let sit on your face and wipe off with a warm towel to reduce acne!)
  • scalp moisturizer
Please check this product out! You can get a BIG jar of coconut oil at walmart for about $6!!

Silicon MIX Intensive Hair Deep Treatment 16oz By Avanti

Silicon mix! Now, I know you have heard of this stuff being a God-send for natural hair. Let me tell you, it works for relaxed hair too! This product is a thick and creamy texture with a very LOUD smell (kind of like old lady perfume). I warn you, the smell is strong and lasts in your hair for about a week ( if you dont wash it again) BUT, the benefit outweighs the bad! After a shampoo, let this sit in your hair for about 3 minutes. It brings brittle and weak hair back to life and is also good for human hair/remi/virgin weaves! ONE TIP though, you must do a deep conditioning AFTER rinsing the silicon mix out, or you may experience dryness if you just rinse it out and air dry/blow dry. This stuff makes you hair SUPER soft and manageable! Helps you comb through thick and dry hair efforlessly! Check it out! I got it on Ebay.com for just $5!! But you can find it for about $10 to $13 dollars now.

Roux Porosity Control Shampoo

Last but not least, Roux Porosity shampoo! I have used this product for over a year now and I love love it. I have a HUGE problem with my hair being very porous. High porous hair is prone to frizzing, poofing up in humidity, dryness and breakage (vs low porous hair with is always heavy and weighed down) because my hair strands have more "openings" in it, which allows moisturizer to flow out faster and not be retained. It also means that my hair "soaks up" water in the air when I walk outside...I hate it!!! This shampoo helps correct hair porosity and helps "fix" highly porous hair by repairing it and help fill the "gaps or openings". This shampoo doesnt lather up much, but that doesnt mean its not working. You only need a little bit and this one bottle has last me for a year (because I did not use it every time I shampooed, just once in a while). I can tell a difference in smoothness and humidity blockage when I am finished heat styling.

I hope you have found my products to be helpful and feel free to leave comments below! Thank you!!!
