First Attempt! Crochet Braids/Twistout!

Crochet Braids using latch hook method
Hello!! I am just coming to you to share my experience doing crochet braids for the first time! I used the latch hook method, which involves using the tool below:

The first time I attempted it, I crocheted all the marley braid hair into my head. My hair was braided straight back but I made a "V" shaped braid in the front, like the  picture below:

This allowed me to be able to switch my part to the middle or the side. I used a brand called "AFRO KINKY BRAID". FYI: I will never use this brand again because the hair gets hard and crunchy and it is dull! We after brushing the marley braid hair out and dampening it with water, I installed it with the latch hook. After installing all the hair, I rolled a few pieces with the hard plastic perm rods, then dipped them in some very hot water in a cup. The process was very hard and I burned myself several times with the hot water! I decided to take it all out because I was tired of burning myself and was not gettng the curl pattern I wanted. I decided to use the "pre-dipped" method instead, were I would roll the hair on the rods first, dip it in hot water for 30 seconds, let it air dry overnight, and install the curled hair in the morning. This worked soooo much better! Below are the examples of the rods I used (some perm rods, some flexi rods) and the type of curl the rods yields:

Perm and flexi rods with culr resulgs (orange, red & purple)

Once the curls were dry, I used the latch hook to install them (took about 25 minutes), and voila!
Finished look!

I love the look, however I dont like how rough the hair I used is. I will be trying it on my hair again soon! I did my sister-in-laws hair (using this same method) and she loved it! She used a different type of hair (Motown Tress) with a little color in it. I like that type of hair better, however she got less hair in one pack:
